Dear Indy,
Some city-county councilors want to see Indianapolis move toward Vision Zero — a broadly used term that essentially rethinks how city infrastructure is designed.
Rather than prioritizing vehicle travel above all else, Vision Zero advocates aim to eliminate traffic deaths and injuries for cyclists and pedestrians.
City-County Councilor John Barth, a Democrat who represents the north side, said he soon planned to introduce a proposal that would initiate the process.
“We have a unique situation where we have a huge city that over the last 50 years has been designed completely with cars in mind,” Barth said. “So we’re having to make intentional decisions to adjust that infrastructure to be responsive to what people’s expectations are now.”
