On August 12, Mayor Joe Hogsett introduced the 2025 budget proposal to the Indianapolis City-County Council. The presentation highlighted strategic investments in public safety, anti-violence, infrastructure and traffic safety.

What happened?

The city plans to allocate public health and safety funds to IMPD to hire new officers and firefighters, invest in technology like license plate readers, body cameras and a mobile traffic safety center, and to develop a program dedicated to enhanced public safety in parks. Approximately 28% of the city’s budget will help fund IMPD initiatives.

The allocation of funds for anti-violence initiatives will increase the funding for community mental health centers and provide $250,000 for the Tenant Legal Assistance Project and the Eviction Avoidance Project with Indiana Legal Services.

The presentation also highlighted the significant funding allocated for infrastructure projects. A total of $199.6 million will be invested in roads, greenways and pedestrian safety, with an additional $70 million allocated for stormwater system improvements. Approximately 22% of the budget will go to the Department of Public Works.

A public hearing will be held at the City-County Building on September 23. This is an opportunity for Indianapolis residents to provide public comments on the proposed budget. The Council is scheduled to vote on adopting the budget on October 7.
