I never miss an opportunity to err on the side of superstition, and New Year’s Day is full of lucky rituals: ring-shaped foods to “ring” in the new year, greens and coin-shaped legumes to cultivate wealth.
One of my favorite good-luck food traditions comes from Spain: “las doce uvas de la suerte” or “the twelve grapes of luck.” Eating 12 grapes at midnight, they say, will bring good fortune. As you eat the grapes, the way each grape tastes reveals how the corresponding month will go.
If the first grape is sweet, January is going to be great for you. If grape No. 5 is sour, May is going to be rotten.
For you, I have collected 12 sounds to use for fortune telling, like “las doce uvas de la suerte.” Like a horoscope, each sound’s caption tells you what might happen in that month. As you listen, reflect honestly on your gut feelings. Will your month be sweet or rotten?
Here’s how it works:
- To predict your year, first pick a number between 1-12.
- Each sound provided below is numbered. Start with the number you picked, then listen to the sound and read the fortune. Whichever number you start with will tell you how January will go for you.
- Continue listening and reading for each month until you reach the bottom, then start back at the top. You should finish where you started.
For example, if you pick #5 for January, you’ll hear and read 5-12, then 1-4, with #4 being your December.
