The fifth annual Indianapolis Black Documentary Film Festival returns Aug. 23-25 with screenings at the Indianapolis Art Center and the Kan-Kan Cinema and Restaurant.

Paul Laurence Dunbar: Beyond the Mask,” about the first African American to achieve national fame as a writer, will kick off the festival at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the Indianapolis Art Center. Several films, including “She Shapes Shadow & Light,” “The Girl in the Yellow Scarf,” “Samuel Plato: Preserving a Legacy” and “The Only Alternative: Exploring the Black Experience at Ball State” have ties to Indiana.

“She Shapes Shadow & Light” was produced for the 2023 Indiana Governor’s Arts Awards, and highlights D. Del Reverda-Jennings, an Indianapolis-based, multidisciplinary artist.

The festival includes 25 films that tell the stories, accomplishments and hurdles faced by African Americans throughout history. Tickets start at $11.79. For a full list of films, schedules and ticket options, click here.
