The Indianapolis Public Library announced on Feb. 27 that Central Library was “temporarily closed.” Two weeks later, the downtown branch of the Indianapolis Public Library still has not reopened for patrons.
It turns out, a 575-pound glass panel in the library’s six-story atrium fractured. But, the panel is still up 50 feet up in the air, intact.
“There’s a risk that falling pieces could cause injury, so we’re keeping the building closed to the public until the repair is addressed,” Mary Barr, a spokesperson from the Indianapolis Public Library, wrote in an email.
“The work requires the right equipment and professionals to make sure everything is secure before welcoming everyone back inside,” she wrote.
There is no reopening date set yet. Check the Central Library web page for updates.
“I can’t speculate on that, and I have no further opening date information for today, but will happily share reports as I learn them,” Barr said in an email.
In the meantime, you can still do curbside pickup for books, movies and seeds from the seed library. Call 317-275-4189 at least 30 minutes before you plan to arrive. You can check out the seeds the library is offering online and pick up to five packets of seeds per transaction.
You can find other locations, rescheduled events and virtual author talks online.
