Math plays a critical role in the world around us — but not everyone is taught math the same way.

Educators from Shortridge High School and the University of Indianapolis’ Shaheen College of Arts & Sciences are teaming up for a discussion about how math is taught in schools and they’re inviting the community to join them.

The event will begin with a screening of the documentary “Counted Out,” which explores the power of math and who is equipped with the learning to understand its uses.

A panel will then discuss the film’s themes and the importance of math literacy in civic engagement and economic opportunity.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. March 31 at Shortridge High School’s Caleb Mills Auditorium. The screening will begin at 6 p.m. and the panel will speak for about half an hour after the screening.

Visit the screening’s Eventbrite website to RSVP and watch a trailer for the documentary.
