If back-to-school season has you wanting to learn a new skill, try taking a creative class. This fall, you can learn anything from designing a wig to 3D printing to salsa dancing at local community spaces. Some classes are free or donation-based; many are $50 or less.

Don’t know where to start? We got you. Whether you want to get relaxed and inspired through floral arranging or take a gritty approach and learn welding, this list should have you covered.

Design a wig (free)

Take a free wig design class on Aug. 17-18 with Tony Award-winner Nikiya Mathis. Learn how to create designs for actors of color, participate in “hairversations” (hair conversations) and discuss the history of natural hair, wig prep and texture choices. The class, held at the Athenaeum, is part of the Education for All program facilitated by the Naptown African American Theatre Collective.

Create floral arrangements

At IPL’s Glendale branch, Monthly Power-Up: Me Time events let you relax and get creative. On Saturday, August 17, learn the art of floral arrangement. For $45, you’ll get breakfast and a self-empowerment activity in addition to making your take-home arrangements. The class starts at 10:30 a.m.

Glass blowing

Glass Arts Indiana, located in the depths of the Circle City Industrial Complex at 1125 E. Brookside Ave., offers glass-blowing classes. Browse their Eventbrite and select which piece you’d like to learn how to make, such as plant-watering stakes, cute little ducks, pumpkins or suncatchers. Classes are held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Prices range from $50 to $150.

Make mosaics

Channel your creative drive into making candle holders and lamps, for yourself or as a gift. Mosaic Art Studio at The Stutz, 1060 N. Capitol Ave., is a place to explore artisan mosaic crafts and the cultures they come from. Each class fee ranges from $35 to $139, and the next dates are Aug. 25 and 26.

Learn welding or 3D printing (free)

Learn how to weld from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Machyne at 16 Tech at the Welding & CNC Plasma Cutter Workshop. This free event welcomes beginner and seasoned welders. You’ll learn metal fabrication, MIG Welding and finishing skills to make your own bookends.

Also free at Machyne at 16 Tech: Design and create 3D printed products from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18. Discover all the different things you can print and learn how to design and problem-solve. Open to beginners or those looking to enhance their skills.

Write poetry

Join Nick Reading at the Indiana Writers Center, 4011 N. Pennsylvania St., for a donation-based poetry writing session from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 27. Students will look at contemporary authors for inspiration, then have open drafting time. Class members will have the opportunity to share and respond to each other’s work.

Create tile art

Join Blue’s Tile Art and The Artsy Alchemist and learn to make a unique tile art piece at the Marilyn Rose Center from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, August 30. The Wellness Through Art class, $45-$50, is designed to help you find balance and peace through artistic expression. You’ll also hear two artists walk through their techniques.

Learn to dance

On Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m., North Mass Boulder offers Capoeira classes for beginners. North Mass members get in free, or if you purchase the class for $20, you’ll also get a day-pass to the entire facility. Capoeira is a dynamic, acrobatic, and playful mix of expressive movement and martial elements originating from Brazil, with roots in the African Diaspora.

Try out salsa dancing with Sazón Mondays! at Iris Rosa Dance Studio. The next classes are at 6:30 p.m. August 19 and 26. Go by yourself or bring a partner and learn the basics of salsa dancing. Fee is $20 to $75. Iris Rosa, 1145 E. 22nd St., also offers tap and jazz dance classes for beginners. Class prices vary.

Print cyanotypes on fabric

Cyanotype is a camera-less photography made out in the sun, rather than in a darkroom. Join Erin Patton McFarren from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, August 24, at Aurora Photo Center for a workshop to learn the process of cyanotype and create a take home piece of fabric with the art you created. $45.

Learn screen printing

Make It Take Its” are casual creative classes at the Indy Art Center in Broad Ripple. On Friday, September 6, from 7 to 9 p.m., a Matisse-Inspired Screen Printing class will teach you the basics of screen printing using Matisse’s carefree approach to making art. $56.

Make ceramic art

The Fountain Square Clay Center’s “One-Night Classes” on weekend evenings are perfect for a self-care solo date or a fun activity with a friend. This class is designed for people with no prior experience working with ceramics and allows you to make two pieces for $45. Next classes are Saturday, September 7, and Friday, September 13.

Learn to fiddle or play guitar

Instructors at Arthur’s Music Store offer a variety of music lessons, and classes cost $25 per half-hour. You can take lessons as long as you like.
