A committee of city-county councilors plans to meet this week to discuss potential zoning regulations around data centers.
The Wednesday, Jan. 28 meeting is expected to feature testimony from the city’s Office of Sustainability along with experts from the National Laboratory of the Rockies, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Hoosier Environmental Council.
Members of the public will be allowed to comment at the hearing, according to the agenda.
Data centers have been the subject of debate at the local, state and national level. Proponents say they spur economic development and public infrastructure, while critics say they provide few jobs, require vast amounts of water and increase energy costs for consumers.
Indianapolis could be home to several new data centers in the coming years.
Hundreds of residents in Martindale Brightwood are pushing back against a company’s plans to build a data center there. Similar efforts are underway in Pike Township and Decatur Township.
