Corrections and clarifications were made on Nov. 26, 2025: This story was updated to add additional information and context about the labor agreement between the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Indianapolis. The story’s headlines were also updated to more accurately frame the story.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is asking the City-County Council to approve a funding transfer to cover the cost of higher officer salaries and new equipment.

The proposal under consideration would transfer $6.8 million to the sheriff’s office to pay for the collective bargaining agreement between the Indiana Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council and the city of Indianapolis. Most of the funding is from the county general fund, along with $630,650 from the medical care for inmates fund.

The Indiana FOP Labor Council represents police, sheriff’s deputies, corrections officers, dispatchers and law enforcement support staff. The new labor agreement, which took effect this year and runs through 2028, increased the salaries of sheriff’s deputies.

What is the county general fund?

The county general fund covers the day-to-day operations and general government functions of the county. It is mostly funded by income and property taxes.

What is collective bargaining?

Collective bargaining is the process in which employees, represented by a union (in this case, the Indiana Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council), negotiate for salaries, hours and other benefits.

What’s next?

The next full City-County Council meeting is 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in the Public Assembly Room of the City-County Building, 200 E. Washington St.
