School enrollment has significantly decreased for Wayne Township schools.

In February, district officials announced enrollment numbers fell by 626 at the start of the 2025-26 school year, and an additional 199 students left between October 2025 and February 2026.

“The report really presents us with what are some pretty unprecedented declines in enrollment,” Steven Samuel, assistant superintendent of finance and operations, said at the school board work session. “And those obviously also have a financial impact.”

This means that more students are graduating than enrolling as kindergarten students, which is known as a negative replacement. This pattern appears to be widespread, as Samuel mentioned he only knew of one district in Indiana that saw any growth in enrollment.

Samuel also addressed how to move forward, “Number one, implement the cost savings measures that we’ve identified, of course, [and] adjust enrollment projections, but don’t be draconian.”

What’s next?

The next work session for the Wayne Township school board is 6:30 p.m. March 23 at the Wayne Township Education Center, 1220 S. High School Road.
