A new grant will help uninsured women in Marion County get free mammograms at Franciscan Health.

The Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust awarded Franciscan Health over $19,000 from donations and the sale of a special breast cancer awareness license plate. The funds primarily will cover mammograms, but also can be used for diagnostic imaging, ultrasounds and MRIs.

Mammograms help identify breast cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer death for Hoosiers, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. African American women in the state face disparities with the disease, including a higher mortality rate.

Here are the qualifications for the the grant:

  • You must live in Marion, Morgan, Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson or Shelby counties.
  • You must be 40 or older, or under 40 with a family history of breast cancer.
  • You are uninsured and fall at or below the 300% federal poverty level. For one person, that’s making $45,180 or less in annual income. For a family of three, it’s $77,460 or less.

Locations supported include Franciscan Health Breast Center Indianapolis, Franciscan Health Indianapolis Imaging Greenbrooke in Greenwood and Franciscan Health Breast Center in Mooresville. To apply, call 317-528-7201.
