Come out to the old Indianapolis Fire Department Station 18 on the outskirts of the former Central State Hospital on May 31 to hear about the first steps to redevelop the retired station.

Rokh Research & Design Studio and several local Indianapolis organizations will hold the first of five Community Day events from noon to 3 p.m. at 3000 W. Washington St. to introduce plans for the station’s redevelopment, learn what you think of those plans and listen to your suggestions for changes. Early ideas include a public rooftop, a play area and nearby parking.

The station was built in December 1936 and was closed in 1994, the same year that Central State Hospital was closed. It was replaced by a new IFD Fire Station 18 at 42 N. Warman Ave.

In addition to the fire station, the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development is seeking to redevelop the six-acre Central State Grove and four other properties on the former hospital grounds.

The event is free, and street parking is available nearby.
