The name Mirror Indy comes from wanting local news in which we see ourselves. In the arts and culture section, our goal is to feature the many amazing things happening in our city.
It’s a big goal.
Arts and culture means something different to each person — it can be theater, it can be a fancy art show or punk music in someone’s basement. It can be a crochet club at the library or wrestling on Friday nights. It can be a great cup of chai or a breakfast restaurant that makes people feel welcome.
For this reason, we built many pockets where people can share the things that matter to them with us, and with everyone else who reads Mirror Indy.
Here’s how:
Pitching a story or sending a tip
Arts and culture reporter Mesgana Waiss has covered underground dance clubs, budget cuts to cultural organizations and other important breaking news .
Sometimes we need to tell stories to hold people and organizations accountable.
If you have a story tip, you can reach Mesgana Waiss at mesgana.waiss@mirrorindy.org.
If you are a writer looking to publish arts and culture stories, send me an email to jennifer.delgadillo@mirrorindy.org and tell me about your ideas and a little bit about yourself.
Promoting your event
There are a few ways you can share your events with Mirror Indy. The easiest way is to upload your event to our event calendar.
You can also send your event information to hello@mirrorindy.org. If the editors think your event has high community value, we might end up sharing it in one of our newsletters.
Recommending something you really like
Mirror Indy’s arts and culture newsletter Play List has a section called “What We’re Doing” that was created to share recommendations.
Have you had an amazing falafel lately in Indianapolis? Tell us where to go.
Is there a dance class for beginners in our city that changed your life? Tell us all about it.
As long as it’s related to arts and culture, and happening in Indy, we want to know.
Sharing with others how much you love Indy
As arts and culture editor at Mirror Indy, what I find most rewarding in my job is learning about the cultural things that make each one of us swoon.
For me, a nice day is looking at paintings at the Eiteljorg Museum and then going for a stroll on the Canal Walk.
But there are tons of other things happening in this city.
To learn about what our fellow neighbors are up to and what makes them swoon, we created the series My Culture Journal.
Culture Journals follow a person for seven days — where they eat, listen to live music, the cool art spaces they visit and whatever other fun places they might want to share with others.
The Indiana Fever wrote one. Santa Claus wrote one too. But you don’t need to be famous. Anyone can pitch a Culture Journal to Mirror Indy.
You can see all Culture Journals here.
If you are interested in submitting a journal, email me at jennifer.delgadillo@mirrorindy.org and tell me about yourself.
And because it’s called Play List, yes, we do welcome people’s playlists. We wanna hear the Indy music you like, too.
Getting attention for your accomplishments or media mentions
Everyone loves a shout out. You deserve one too!
Play List has a section called What Else is Up, and that’s where we share things that deserve a little more love.
Did you record a music album or get a feature written in a magazine? Are you screening a film? Were you the guest in a cool arts and culture podcast or published your book? Did you invent a new drink?
Let us give you your flowers. Email your links and photos to jennifer.delgadillo@mirrorindy.org.
