A group of immigrants’ rights organizations plans to gather this week to draw attention to state bills targeting immigration.
The Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus will host “The People’s Assembly” from 10 a.m. to noon March 13 on the fourth floor of the Indiana Statehouse, 200 W. Washington St.

The event will focus on the legislation and ways to support and protect immigrant communities across Indiana.
One Republican-led bill, for example, would require law enforcement to notify the county sheriff if they arrest someone they suspect is not legally in the U.S. The legislation passed the House and is making its way through the Senate.
Another Republican-led bill also awaiting Senate approval would threaten legal action against local governments that fail to comply with federal immigration authorities. It would also require schools to report students who are “unlawfully present.”
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, a Republican, has already threatened legal action against Indianapolis Public Schools and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department if they fail to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, which have ramped up enforcement since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.
Residents who want to attend “The People’s Assembly” can find more information online.
