The Indiana University board of trustees approved the construction of a $110-million, 134,000-square-foot athletics arena for the IU Indianapolis campus.
The multipurpose arena and gym, approved June 14, will have a volleyball/basketball court with the capacity to seat 4,500 spectators. IU hopes the venue will allow the school to host both high school and collegiate tournaments and sporting events.
The state is funding $89 million, and IU Indianapolis is paying $21 million.
The move comes as IUPUI prepares to split into IU Indianapolis and Purdue University in Indianapolis on July 1. On June 7, Purdue’s board of trustees authorized $187 million for Purdue’s first new building in Indianapolis, which will be a mix of classroom facilities and dorms.

IU Indianapolis’ new athletics facility will be located at the crossroads of Blackford and Ohio streets, south of the Herron School of Art & Design and near the IU Natatorium and the National Institute for Fitness and Sport.
Last week, IU trustees also approved architectural designs for a new 52,000-square-foot laboratory building for IU Indianapolis, which will be located at the intersection of Blackford and New York streets. That $60-million project is funded by the state.
