Black faith leaders in Indianapolis can get free suicide prevention training at an April 29 workshop.

The all-day event, Soul Shop for Black Churches, will help participants learn how to respond to mental health crises and teach their congregations about suicide awareness. It is open to both formal and informal church leaders, as well as different denominations.

The event is sponsored by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction. Organizers said it is a response to increased suicide rates among Black men and youth in Indiana.

Men are four times likely to die from suicide than women, according to a Indiana Department of Health 2023 report. It’s the same statistic for Black men in the state, who are at a higher risk of suicide because of discrimination and barriers to getting mental health care, according to a 2017 data analysis from the health department.

The goal of the workshop is to make churches a place of hope and facilitate outreach to people experiencing thoughts of suicide. It is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 402 W. Washington St.
