A local education organization that seeks to spark kids’ interest in math is launching the first of its fall semester math circles on Sept. 7.

The math circles, organized by Exponentia Prime, engage students in grades K-8 with math puzzles, games and challenges designed to prepare them for a competition later in the school year.

The free events are open to students from all schools.

Patrick Jones, the founder, is a former math teacher for Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School and is currently a senior vice president at The Mind Trust, a nonprofit that supports charter schools and other education initiatives across Indianapolis.

Jones said Exponentia Prime seeks to teach students how to be better problem-solvers through math exercises. Students in grades K-5 take their skills to a regional math contest in February while older students can complete a math assessment. Last year, Jones said, 42 students from seven schools participated in the contest.

Each circle begins with an hour of competition-style math preparation and is followed by an hour of strategy games.

Exponentia Prime organizes the circles once a month in different locations across the city. Students from all schools are welcome, and snacks are provided.

How to register

This month’s math circle will be from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 7 at Rooted School Indy, 5750 E. 30th St. Students are not required to have participated in a past math circle to attend.

Families can register for the math circle events on the Exponentia Prime website. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay and attend the math circles with their students.
