Emergency shelter options

Call the shelter ahead of time to see if they have space available. If a shelter is full, call back the next day to check again. Connect2Help (317-926-4357) and Indiana 211 can also provide information on shelter availability.

For women and families

Wheeler Mission Shelter for Women and Children

Services: Addiction recovery, mental health support, family programming, life skills, education, career support and a medical clinic.

Requirements: For women 18 and older with or without children.


Dayspring Center

Services: Case management when families are ready to leave, youth services and summer camp programs.

Requirements: Must have children.


Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis

Services: Temporary shelter for children and single, unmarried, married or same-sex adults who care for them.

Requirements: Must have a dependent child (including being pregnant) and not be fleeing domestic violence.


Holy Family Shelter

Services: Residential program, case management and supportive services.

Requirements: For single adults with children; couples with or without children; or single pregnant women. Parents must provide proof of legal custody of children.


Queen of Peace Shelter

Requirements: Must be sober. Boys must be 5 or younger. Call at 8 a.m. to schedule intake. If you’re working, you must provide a work schedule. Phones are taken at night and returned at 6 a.m.


For men

Requirements: For men 18 and older. Have an ID if possible. No children allowed.


Good News Ministries

Services: Emergency and long-term shelter. Food, clothing, on-site medical care, addiction counseling, job and life skills training, education assistance, assistance obtaining high school equivalency.

Requirements: For men 17 and older.


For youth

Services: Shelter for endangered children and runaway, homeless youth.

Requirements: Must have parent/legal guardian permission to stay at the shelter.


Stopover

Services: Emergency shelter in a supervised setting for up to eight youth, male or female, ages 12-17.

Where to find housing

The Indianapolis Coordinated Entry System is a process to connect people to housing. To get on the coordinated entry list, complete an assessment at an organization that serves as an access point.

Where to find rent and utility assistance

Township trustees

The trustee’s office in your township might be able to help you with rent, utility bills and even other things such as food and back-to-school supplies. The exact services you can get depends on where you live.
