Latino immigrants living in Indy can learn about their legal rights at an upcoming free workshop.

Immigration attorney Paul Gresk will break down the latest changes in immigration law and answer questions. The event, called Know Your Rights: Immigration Day for the Latino Community, is from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 28 at the International District Community Center, 3540 Commercial Drive.

Attendees will receive red cards that state their rights, as well as informational flyers about immigration and a coupon for a free attorney consultation.

The Alliance for Latino Migrant Advocacy held a similar workship on the east side earlier this month.

The efforts to inform immigrants of their rights comes amid a push by the Trump administration to begin mass deportations of immigrants. It also comes as Republican lawmakers in the Indiana General Assembly advance legislation targeting immigrants.

House Republicans recently passed a bill that would give the attorney general’s office more authority to investigate businesses that might be employing immigrants lacking permanent legal status. It would also require local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

The bill is awaiting action in the Indiana Senate.
