Indianapolis has received more than $30 million in funding to support eight infrastructure projects, the Department of Public Works announced June 13.
Projects selected for federal funding include a pedestrian bridge for the Nickel Plate Trail, over Keystone Avenue near 49th Street. The trail, which is expected to be fully completed by spring 2025, connects the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Fall Creek, the Monon Trail, Castleton and Hamilton County.

The funding comes from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is responsible for awarding federal funds to transportation and infrastructure projects in the Indianapolis metro area. City engineers submit projects for consideration on an annual basis.
The grant funding also will go toward shoring up the 38th Street bridge over Little Eagle Creek and the 46th Street bridge over Indian Creek.
Another project on the south side will remove one lane of traffic and add a sidewalk on Madison Avenue, between Martin Street and Pleasant Run Parkway. The changes will accommodate the future Interurban Trail, which will connect Pleasant Run, the IndyGo Red Line and the Greenwood Trail.
Other projects include improvements to the High School Road bridge over Conrail Railroad, a roundabout at 46th Street and Mitthoefer Road, and funding for the city’s Knozone awareness campaign, which works with residents, schools and businesses to improve the region’s air quality.
The eight projects selected for funding include:
- 38th Street Bridge over Little Eagle Creek Rehabilitation
- 46th Street Bridge over Indian Creek
- High School Road over Conrail Railroad
- Nickel Plate Trail over Keystone Avenue
- 46th Street and Mitthoefer Intersection Improvements
- Madison Ave Road Diet – Martin Street to Pleasant Run Parkway
- South County Line Road Expansion from Depot to Woodcreek Drive
- Knozone Awareness Funding
