The Department of Parks and Recreation broke ground Feb. 27 on a $2.6 million upgrade to Chapel Hill Park in the Chapel Hill-Ben Davis neighborhood.
The work will include a splash pad, playground, basketball court and two pickleball courts.
“(The upgrade) will transform this particular green space into a real destination for all of our neighbors here on the west side,” Mayor Joe Hogsett said. “Families can look forward to coming to Chapel Hill Park not only to spend quality time with their families but also to strengthen their bond with the larger community.”
The Rev. Dave Buckner, pastor of the nearby Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, said he’s glad about the upgrade.
“This park has had kids and family come and play, but it sorely needed some help,” Buckner said. “It brings us together as a community.”
The upgrade is expected to be completed in 2026.
The Chapel Hill Park upgrade is one of 10 on the west side to receive new playgrounds. In all, 42 parks throughout the city will receive upgrades with the support of an $80 million Lilly Endowment grant.
