Indychitlán to make some good noise Nov. 15 at The AMP

En una fría tarde de octubre de 2023, hombres, mujeres y niños bailaron al ritmo de musica rock en español en el patio al aire libre de 10 East Arts, ubicado en 3137 E 10th St. El evento, Indychitlán, organizado por Eduardo Luna, también conocido como “Eddie Calaca”, buscaba destacar la música latina contemporánea del Medio Oeste.

Tras su segunda edición en 2022, el concierto no regresó, hasta ahora.

On a cold afternoon in October 2023, men, women and children danced to Spanish-language rock music in the outdoor patio of 10 East Arts. The event, Indychitlán, organized by Eduardo Luna, also known as “Eddie Calaca,” highlighted contemporary Midwest Latino music.

After its second event in 2022, the concert didn’t return — until now.

Indychitlán vuelve el 15 de noviembre en The AMP, en 16 Tech, con las bandas El CirCo, Guadañita, Tone Zone Skam y Alboroto.

Hablamos con Eddie Calaca sobre sus gustos musicales y cual es la canción Mexicana que le gustaría que todos supiéramos la letra. También le pedimos un playlist.

Indychitlán is coming back on Saturday, Nov. 15, at The AMP at 16 Tech with bands El CirCo, Guadañita, Tone Zone Skam and Alboroto.

We talked to Eddie Calaca about his taste in music and what Mexican song he wished we all knew the lyrics for. We also asked him to make a playlist.

¿Podrías explicar el nombre Indychitlán para los que no sepan qué significa?

“Indy,” Indianapolis; “Chi,” Chicago; “Tlan,” es una posposición náhuatl que significa
“junto a”, “entre”, “bajo” o “en lugar de”, y es un sufijo muy común en la toponimia mexicana que indica que un lugar tiene una gran abundancia de algo.

Can you explain the name Indychitlán for those who don’t know what it means?

“Indy,” Indianapolis.“Chi,” Chicago. “Tlan,” a proposition in the Nahuatl language that means “between” or “in the middle” or “the place of.” It’s a common suffix that indicates a place has an abundance of something.

La música regional Mexicana está teniendo un momento muy grande alrededor del mundo, pero tú eres un chico rockero. ¿Te has sentido tentado a escuchar corridos tumbados de vez en cuando?

Si escucho regional Mexicana. Todo empezó cuando escuché a Los Originales de San Juan en mi época de mesero en los restaurantes Mexicanos, después Los Razos y después El Tigrillo Palma, ya ahora considerados old school del regional. Mi cancion favorita Los Originales de San Juan es “La Troca Del Moño Negro.”

Regional Mexican music is having a huge moment around the world, but you’re a rock guy. Have you ever been tempted to listen to corridos tumbados?

I listen to regional Mexican music. It all started when I heard Los Originales de San Juan back when I was a waiter in Mexican restaurants. Then, Los Razos and then El Tigrillo Palma, now considered old school regional Mexican music. My favorite song by Los Originales de San Juan is “La Troca Del Moño Negro.”

Si pudieras hacer que todos los que viven en Indianápolis se supieran una canción Mexicana, ¿cuál canción aprenderían?

Wow, esa es una pregunta muy difícil de responder tal vez, “Vuela Vuela” por Magneto, “La Incondicional” por Luis Miguel o “Amantes del Futuro” por Rascabuche.

If you could make everyone in Indianapolis know how to sing one Mexican song in Spanish, what song would they learn?

Wow, that’s a really tough question to answer. Maybe “Vuela Vuela” by Magneto, “La Incondicional” by Luis Miguel or “Amantes del Futuro” by Rascabuche.
