IndyGo will host a series of public information meetings starting next week ahead of construction on the Blue Line, the city’s third bus rapid transit route.

The project is estimated to cost $387 million and is expected to debut in 2028.

What is the Blue Line?

The Blue Line will run 24 miles and connect the Indianapolis International Airport to the town of Cumberland via downtown Indianapolis along I-70, Holt Road and Washington Street.

IndyGo says the project will bring infrastructure improvements to Washington Street, including new traffic signals, upgraded sidewalks and curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Construction will also include 7.5 miles of storm sewers to improve water quality.

When will construction start?

An IndyGo spokesperson said construction is expected to begin in the next two months. IndyGo has separated Blue Line construction into 12 segments. Work will start along Washington Street on the east side from Cumberland to Sadlier Drive and downtown from the Julia M. Carson Transit Center to the Indianapolis Zoo.

Road closures and detours

Temporary road closures will begin this summer. A map of expected road closures and detours can be found here.

Will my bus route change?

IndyGo said bus stops and route changes will occur when necessary for rider and construction worker safety.

When construction must occur next to bus stops, those stops may need to be relocated or temporarily closed. Temporary stops will be provided wherever possible. IndyGo will provide communication about stop closures or relocations and bus route detours through email, on-route announcements and social media.

How can I find out more?
