The Department of Justice is accepting public comments through Dec. 28 for a deal it made with Ingredion Inc. to settle allegations its westside corn mill violated the federal Clean Air Act.

The consent decree would require the Illinois-based company to pay a $1.1 million civil penalty and comply with stricter emissions limits. The company also installed nearly $7 million in new equipment, site upgrades and modern monitoring systems to the Indianapolis mill.

The settlement would require Ingredion to give $560,400 to Indiana to support certain redevelopment in and around Marion County.

The Ingredion plant at 1515 Drover St. produces specialty starches used for a variety of applications, like food, paper, textiles and adhesives.

The plant has a long history of record-keeping violations and has entered into multiple legal agreements to reduce its pollution and improve its monitoring in the past, including in 2003, 2008 and 2012.
