Indianapolis Public Schools will roll out 10 new electric buses over the next 18 months.
The district’s third-party transportation provider, First Student, was recently awarded a nearly $4 million grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to purchase the buses and their chargers. It’s a first for IPS.
“This significant investment from the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program allows First Student and IPS to take a giant leap toward environmental responsibility,” IPS Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson said in a news release. “Together, we are driving change and paving the way for a greener, more sustainable education system.”
IPS currently has 246 buses in its fleet. The district has not yet decided which routes the new buses will run.
