La Plaza, the state’s oldest and largest Latino nonprofit, will not host its annual Hispanic Heritage Month festival this year.

In a statement Aug. 20, President and CEO Miriam Acevedo Davis said the celebration will “take a new form out of an abundance of caution and deep commitment to the well-being for the community.”

“Circumstances this year have made it impossible to host the event in the way our community deserves,” the statement said, in part.

Davis could not be reached for comment.

The announcement comes during the Trump administration’s effort to carry out mass deportations. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested nearly 1,400 people in Indiana between Trump’s inauguration in January and June 26.

La Plaza’s 44th annual FIESTA Indianapolis event was scheduled for Sept. 20. The downtown event featured live performances, food and family-friendly activities.

La Plaza will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in other ways, including partnering with Univision, the Spanish-language TV network, to spotlight Central Indiana’s Latino community.

Updates for this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations can be found on La Plaza’s website or on the organization’s social media accounts.
