Looking for a job is really difficult, and it can be hard to know where to start. If you’re struggling, this resource might help you out.
Every Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center offers free career help to anyone who walks in — no appointment required.
The walk-in hours, called Job Club, are a way of making employment services accessible for westside neighbors. People who attend can get help creating or editing a resume, applying for jobs, practicing for interviews and looking at training opportunities.
“It’s a safe space. There’s no fear here,” said Tammy Thomas, Mary Rigg’s employment services manager. “Come here with a lot of work experience, come here with a little work experience, come here with no work experience, and we’re going to help you.”
Some weeks, the center will bring in employers from a variety of industries to talk with attendees. Recently, Mary Rigg invited HVAC, health care and commercial trucking companies to speak to job seekers.
But beyond the resources, Thomas hopes that people who come to Mary Rigg will understand that even though the process takes a long time, they’re not alone.
“Looking for a job is a full-time job,” Thomas said. “We want people to understand that and to come here and feel confident that we’re going to help you present your best self.”
