Students and their families can learn about jobs in health care at a Medical Careers Youth Summit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.
The event at Lawrence Central High School, 7300 E. 56th St., is open to parents, educators, health care workers, community leaders and students in third grade and up.
The summit is being organized by Community Health Network and Black Men in White Coats, an organization that seeks to grow the number of Black men pursuing careers in medical fields through mentorships and exposure to health care professions.
While the number of Black students applying to medical school has increased in recent years, the Association of American Medical Colleges found the number of Black students who stay in their program decreased by 11.6% between the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years.
Black Men in White Coats seeks to reverse this trend specifically among men. However, the Lawrence Central event will be open to not just boys — all students are encouraged to attend.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and network with a diverse group of health care professionals.
