Mirror Indy is inviting you to a screening of “Before a Breath,” a documentary about the U.S.’s stillbirth crisis.
The film follows three women who, in the wake of their own stillbirth experiences, are trying to make pregnancy safer.
Every year in the U.S., more than 20,000 pregnancies end in stillbirth. And research shows that 1 in 4 of those stillbirths is likely preventable.
The documentary was inspired by reporting from ProPublica, an award-winning nonprofit newsroom. That reporting found that the U.S. lags far behind other wealthy countries in reducing its stillbirth rate.
The series was a Pulitzer finalist and was lauded by members of Congress who introduced legislation to authorize states to spend millions of federal dollars on stillbirth prevention.
That legislation was signed last year by then-President Joe Biden.
Duaa Eldeib, the ProPublica reporter behind the series, will join Mirror Indy reporter Emily Hopkins for a Q&A following the screening.
The screening of ProPublica’s “Before a Breath” will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at Kan-Kan Cinema, 1258 Windsor St. Tickets are $6 and you can purchase them online.
This is an independently organized event inspired by reporting from ProPublica, an award-winning nonprofit newsroom.
