I love getting voicemails from the people I care about. I keep them because I’m sentimental, and I love to hear my family and friends’ voices.

Lately, though, my mom’s voicemails have been a mess. She’s left two where she says, “Hi! Call me back.” And then she forgets she’s leaving a voicemail, and I hear background noise for 2 minutes. The rest of her voicemails start with embarrassing nicknames she has for me — which I will definitely not be sharing here.

May 11 will be an extra special Mother’s Day for her, because one of my brothers and his wife are having her first grandkid soon. We’ll celebrate Mother’s Day by helping my mom plant veggies in her garden and eating lunch together after church.

On holidays, my mom misses her grandparents. And as her parents get older, she’s made sure to spend extra time with them and tell them how much they mean to her. That’s why I’m thankful I can call my mom.

For Mother’s Day this year, you can call us at 317-268-2017, wait for the dial tone and leave a brief message for your mom or a mother figure in your life. Just learn from my mom, and hang up after you leave your message.

You can tell the mom in your life why you love her, why you miss her, what you’ve learned from her or anything else you’d like to share. I know the holiday isn’t easy or uncomplicated for all of us. So, as Connie Schultz, one of my favorite Kent State professors, always says on days like these: “If this is a difficult time for you, may the holiday land gently.”
