Vincennes University will offer career and technical training to Indianapolis community members at Marian University’s new westside education district.

Marian announced last year it would revamp the former Larue Carter Hospital into an education hub for the west side of Indianapolis, called the Riverside Education Innovation District.

The college hopes to work with community partners and schools to improve education, especially literacy rates, in the Riverside neighborhood.

Vincennes will create a career and technical education center at the old hospital campus. The college will offer dual credit and training classes in fields such as automotive technology, welding, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity and law enforcement.

The college also plans to offer dual credit courses in trades, such as HVAC, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. Vincennes will use its space within the district for adult education classes and apprenticeship programs.

Vincennes hopes to start offering classes by fall 2027.

The new training center will be Vincennes’ fourth location in Indianapolis. The university has a sign language and deaf studies program at the Indiana School for the Deaf, an aviation school near Indianapolis International Airport and a commercial driver’s license program on the west side.

Other plans for the Riverside district include office space for Marian’s Klipsch Educators College and The Mind Trust, as well as early childhood education from St. Mary’s Early Childhood Center

AES Indiana announced Aug. 25 that the utility will contribute $375,000 to go toward renovating space for St. Mary’s Early Childhood Center at the former hospital.
