UPDATE: Following this weekend’s snow storm, the Warren Township school board has rescheduled its Wednesday, Jan. 28, meeting. The board now plans to meet 6-8 p.m. Feb. 4 at the the Warren Education & Community Center, 975 N. Post Road. Check for more updates on the Warren Township district website.
Warren Township families can learn more about next steps in the district’s plan to make changes to the fifth grade in an upcoming school board meeting.
For several months, administrators have been exploring ways to move fifth grade students from their intermediate-middle school assignments to elementary school.
The idea was popular with parents but district leaders ran into a snag this winter when they received new data showing potential space constraints across the township’s nine elementary schools.
Get the backstory
Now, administrators are going back to the drawing board and studying several new ideas they say could help improve the fifth grade experience for students. Some of those ideas include reopening a former elementary school or renovating existing schools to create more space for students.
Moving fifth graders — who currently attend school with sixth, seventh and eighth graders — is still on the table, but so are a few other ideas. Those include creating an academy only for fifth graders or grouping different grades — such as fourth and fifth or fifth and sixth — together in their own school.
Warren administrators previously said they had hoped to make changes in time for the 2026-27 school year, but it’s possible they could wait given their consideration of new ideas.
In brief comments during a school board meeting Jan. 21, Superintendent Tim Hanson said administrators have been meeting internally to review the effects of such changes on transportation, academics and staffing.
The district has also consulted with an architecture and construction firm to identify the potential scope and cost of renovation projects. Hanson said he hopes to have more information on this to share during the school board’s next meeting.
The next meeting is a public work session 6-8 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Warren Education & Community Center, 975 N. Post Road. You can attend in-person or stream the meeting live on the Warren Township website.
The board will have another public work session to follow up from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 9 in the same location.
