The Wayne Township school board is accepting applications to fill an open seat after one of its members died earlier this month.

The board took a moment of silence during a meeting Nov. 17 to recognize Mike Nance, who died Nov. 8, according to his obituary. Nance was 71.

Nance had served on the Wayne Township school board for 31 years. His current term was set to expire Dec. 31, 2026. Board members will review applications and pick an appointee to serve the remainder of term.

Applications will be accepted through Nov. 30. Applicants must live in the Wayne Township school district boundaries.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and registered to vote in Marion County. You can check your voter registration online using the state’s voter registration portal.

To apply, candidates must fill out an online form accessible on the school district’s website, and provide a resume, cover letter and responses to four questions about their interest in and knowledge of the Wayne Township school board.

The school board will meet in executive session to review prospective appointees and conduct interviews in a public meeting. Information will be shared on the district’s website as interviews are scheduled.

The board anticipates taking a vote on a candidate and swearing in the new member during a Dec. 15 meeting.
