Elanco Animal Health has expanded its presence on Indianapolis’ west side by purchasing dozens more acres of state-owned land next to its new global headquarters.

The company purchased 56 acres of land on the former General Motors stamping plant site in the West Indianapolis neighborhood for $27 million, Gov. Mike Braun’s office announced Aug. 25.

“Securing this property now gives us the certainty we need to integrate it into our headquarters campus and move forward with speed,” said Elanco CEO Jeff Simmons. “That means jobs, investment and an accelerated path to creating the OneHealth Innovation District, connecting human, animal, plant and environmental health.”

The One Health Innovation District is a research hub the company plans to create with Purdue University near Elanco’s headquarters. Plans for the hub include the construction of a facility where Elanco and other future innovation district partners can collaborate with Purdue researchers in shared offices, experimental labs and incubator space.

Braun said the agreement to sell the property ensures that the state remains a full partner in the district’s development.

“This is about more than redeveloping land; it’s about creating jobs, attracting talent, and driving long-term growth for Indiana,” Braun said in a press release.

The district is part of Purdue’s expansion in Indianapolis, which includes a 50-year plan to build 16 new buildings in downtown Indianapolis.

Elanco’s headquarters building is set to open Oct. 1.

The White River State Park extension and the Henry Street bridge project are also under construction on the property.
