We announced that Newfields has a new CEO on Monday, along with the New York Times (it’s a big deal!).

We are asking the community to help us come up with a wish list for CEO Le Monte Booker — things you’d like him to do or change. Do you have anything to add? Send me an email about it at jennifer.delgadillo@mirrorindy.org.

An animated gif illustration shows a cluster of "error" windows popping up that each says, "Fail."

On a scale of 1-10 how are things going for you right now? Whatever your answer, let me just say it’s going to be okay — we asked a local musician, a monk, a therapist, a ceramics artist and a writer about the upside of things gone wrong.

Poster for the play "Toni Stone" shows a team of Black baseball players in black and white, with bright red and blue uniforms. The player in the front center is the only woman among the players. Large text indicates the play is showing Sept. 19-Oct. 6 at The District Theatre.

We asked theater writer Lou Harry to tell us 10 plays we should see this fall and he wrote a story that starts: “Only a sadist would envy theater artistic directors these days.”

He makes some very good points.

Two men smile for a photo together. The one on the left wears a white dress shirt and a name tag that says, Eduardo Luna. The man on the right is older, wearing a suit and a large beaded pendant.

Artists we talked to said that John Vanausdall, the late Eiteljorg museum CEO, was a true friend and ahead of his time.

Vanausdall, who died Aug. 17, championed contemporary Indigenous artists and transformed the museum along the way.

We asked BUTTER artists to tell us what they’re up to this week.

  • “I draw a lot of inspiration from video games. I am playing ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ and am completely inspired by the art direction, storytelling and smooth gameplay. If you’re a gamer, you should definitely give it a try!”
    Israel Solomon, artist
  • “I’ve been all over the place this month in preparation for BUTTER, while also juggling my day job and freelance ventures. A great remedy has been unloading at J. Clyde’s karaoke nights!”
    Machaila Gray, artist

What’s good, friends!

Last weekend was jam-packed. Saturday, we were at Feast of Lanterns in Spades Park enjoying the annual celebration of light, love and togetherness. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to say, “Hey!”

We also had a street team delegation of photogs, reporters and Documenters all over Fountain Square for the Chreece hip-hop festival! Check out our photo recaps of Feast and Chreece to relive all that Naptown magic.

Speaking of, I had the honor of hosting the Breaking Barriers to Build Wealth awards banquet put on by the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce. Congrats to everyone who was honored for increasing Black entrepreneurship. Among this year’s recipients were Malina Simone Bacon and Alan Bacon, co-founders of GANGGANG.

This week marks GANGGANG’s 5th equity-centered fine arts festival, BUTTER. Because #WeSeeIndy we’ll absolutely be in the mix capturing all the moments, the memories, the fashion. A time will be had!

I’ll wrap up this week with a moment of gratitude for a life well lived. On Thursday, WFYI’s Echoes of Indiana Avenue will celebrate R&B vocalist Jimmy Guilford, who died Aug. 20. Until then, listen to this interview Kyle Long did in May 2019 for Cultural Manifesto.

Local theater is in full swing, and while we celebrate actors, stagehands and theater directors, it also gives me an excuse to share some Broadway hits.

With songs from the 2010 revival of “Promises, Promises” to “The Fantasticks” to the Josh Groban revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (which I’m still kicking myself for missing), here’s a playlist for your journey to this year’s fall theater season.
