Immigrant families who are wondering about their rights can attend an April 16 informational session led by U.S. Rep. André Carson’s office.
The Indianapolis Democrat’s webinar will provide information about public benefits and financial and guardianship considerations should a family member be detained by federal law enforcement.
Immigrants’ rights organizations have been ramping up their outreach efforts in the wake of the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts, which recently led to the wrongful deportation of a Maryland man to El Salvador.
The Trump administration is arguing that it is not obligated to help the man get out of prison in El Salvador, seemingly in defiance of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling directing the administration to facilitate his return to the U.S.
In Indiana, meanwhile, some international students at Indiana University and Purdue University have had their visas revoked.Â
Local community leaders have said the Trump administration’s policies have created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety.
The webinar is being held in collaboration with local groups including the Mayor’s Latino Advisory Council, the Coalition for Our Immigration Neighbors and Immigrant Welcome Center. Presentations will include representatives from the Indiana Justice Project, Lopez Legal, Flora Legal and Centra Credit Union.
The event is from 6-8 p.m. April 16 on Zoom. Click here to sign up.
The webinar will be available in English, Spanish or Haitian Creole. There will be live interpreters on the call and participants will be able to select their preferred language.
All camera, microphone and chat functions will be disabled to help protect the identity of participants.
