A renters advocacy organization will host a town hall for tenants at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Indiana Historical Society, 450 W. Ohio St.
The “Rent Too High” town hall, hosted by the Indiana Tenants Association, will include a panel, Q&A and opportunity for renters to share their stories.
Laurin Embry, director of the association, said panelists will include a representative from Indiana Legal Services and Indianapolis City-County Council President Vop Osili.
Lawyers from Indiana Legal Services, Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic and the city’s Tenant Advocacy Project will be available to offer legal advice.
Embry said part of the goal for the town hall is to educate renters and help them find resources.
The average rent for a one-bedroom unit in Indianapolis right now is about $1,200, according to Rent.com, a real estate listings website. That’s a 7% year-over-year increase.
Indianapolis also consistently has among the most eviction filings in the country. There were 2,179 filings in the month before Nov. 1, according to data tracked by the Eviction Lab at Princeton University.
