Cuenterete Teatro, una compañía teatral que operó en El Salvador de 1985 a 2024 con más de 150 títeres artesanales, presenta su primer espectáculo en Indianápolis durante el Festival IndyFringe.

La obra, que también es la primera función en español en el Festival IndyFringe, es una adaptación de “El Traje Nuevo Del Emperador” de Hans Christian Andersen.

Cuenterete Teatro, a theater company that operated in El Salvador from 1985-2024 with over 150 handmade puppets, is performing its first show in Indianapolis during the IndyFringe Festival.

The play, which is also the first-ever performance in Spanish at IndyFringe Festival, is an adaptation of “The Emperor’s New Wardrobe” by Hans Christian Andersen.

Juan Francisco Ramos, fundador de Cuenterete Teatro, es el autor de la adaptación e interpretará todos los papeles de la obra, incluyendo al emperador, un bufón, un diseñador, un primer ministro y un niño.

Para saber más sobre el espectáculo, el director de curiosidades de Mirror Indy — un “Lafufu” hecho por artistas locales — conversó con el títere emperador.

Juan Francisco Ramos, the founder of Cuenterete Teatro, is the author of the adaptation and will perform all the roles in the play, which include the emperor, a buffoon, a designer, a prime minister and a child.

To learn more about the show, Mirror Indy’s curiosity chief officer — a local artist-made “Lafufu” — spoke to the emperor puppet.

¿Quién eres y qué haces?

Pues yo soy el emperador, en un hermoso cuento de un señor llamado Hans Christian Andersen que lo hizo allá en Dinamarca.

Who are you and what do you do?

I am the emperor from a beautiful tale written by a man named Hans Christian Andersen. He wrote it in Denmark.

¿Qué te trajo aquí a Indy?

Bueno, pues yo nací aquí. En Indy. Parezco viejo pero realmente estoy bien chiquitito hehe estoy recién nacido, casi. Lo que pasa es que mi creador es de El Salvador, y estoy aquí, estabilizando aquí, y para hacer teatro.

How did you arrive in Indy?

I was born here. In Indy. I might look old, but I’m merely a sprout. I’m a newborn. My creator is from El Salvador and I’m here to make theater.

¿De qué se trata tu nuevo show?

Mi show trata sobre un emperador, es decir yo, que es muy vanidoso. ¿No se nota, no? Y por vanidoso, le venden una tela que no puede ser vista ni por ladrones ni por tontos. Pero en realidad es una mentira que todos se la van creyendo por no tener el valor de decir la verdad.

De eso se trata el show, así que los niños, las niñas, las familias van a reflexionar sobre este tema muy importante, que los niños deben crecer con honestidad.

What is the show about?

My show is about an emperor — me — he is very vain. You can’t tell, right? Because he is so vain, he is sold a fabric that can’t be seen by thieves or by fools. But the truth is that it’s a lie and everyone believes it because they don’t have the courage to tell the truth.

That’s what the show is about. Children and adults can reflect on this very important topic so that kids can grow up valuing honesty.

¿Qué te inspiró a hacer esta obra?

Lo que pasa es que a mi creador le gusta mucho trabajar con niños, con niñas y con jóvenes y hacer teatros para ellos. Entonces a los niños hay que enseñarles el valor de la verdad. Y esta obra trata sobre eso. Sobre la vanidad del emperador, si, pero también sobre el valor de la verdad, por que los súbditos los súbditas, el séquito del emperador, todos mienten por presión de los mismos súbditos y súbditas por no dar a conocer la verdad por que tienen miedo.

El miedo es terrible. Así que no hay que tener miedo, hay que decir la verdad aunque otros no estén de acuerdo.

What inspired you to make this play?

My creator really likes working with children and young people. He thinks we need to teach children the importance of the truth. This story deals with that — the emperor’s vanity, but also the value of truth.

The emperor’s subjects and entourage, they all lie out of pressure and don’t tell the truth because they are scared. Fear is terrible. One must tell the truth even when people don’t agree.

¿Podrías decirnos por qué todos deberíamos ir a ver “El Traje nuevo del Emperador”?

¡Claro! ¡Por que se van a divertir! ¡Me van a ver a mi! Además de divertirse también se van a educar y van a reflexionar. Esta obra es para niños, para niñas, para papás, para mamás porque después pueden hablar muy bien sobre lo que trata la obra. Vengan a divertirse. Se van a reír, pero también van a reflexionar sobre la realidad y como también nosotros, a través de nuestras actitudes, podemos cambiar.

Why should we go see “The Emperor’s New Wardrobe”?

Because you will have a good time. You will see me! Besides, you will learn and you will reflect. This play is great for children and for parents because after the show you can talk about what the play is about.

Come have a good time and laugh, but also reflect on reality and how we can all make a change through our attitudes.

Shows are 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15; 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16; and 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17.
