Residents have one last chance to share their thoughts on the city’s arts budget on Thursday, Oct. 2.
Judith Thomas, president and CEO of the Indy Arts Council, presented a $1.3 million budget proposal to the councilors on the Parks and Recreation committee at a Sept. 4 meeting.
Upcoming meeting
Parks and Recreation review and analysis meeting
🗓️ 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2
📍 City-County Building, 200 E. Washington St.
Indy Arts Council, the city arts advocacy and services agency, is requesting the same amount of money it received last year. Between 2024-2025, the council awarded over 100 grants to arts organizations and individual artists in Central Indiana.
The public can sign up to speak at the Parks and Recreation review and analysis meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at the City-County Building.
Some artists and arts organization leaders are unhappy with the Arts Council’s current proposal. If approved, the budget proposal for 2026 would represent about 0.07% of the city’s total budget.
Many have asked for an increase due to arts funding cuts happening around the country.
In May, the Trump administration canceled hundreds of federal arts grants nationwide, including in Indiana. Gov. Mike Braun’s two-year state budget cut the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency that supports arts education and economy, by 34%, or $1.7 million.
The city council will vote on the entire city budget on Oct. 6. The public will not be able to comment at the meeting.
