You can give your feedback on ideas for reshaping Indianapolis’ public schools.

The Indianapolis Local Education Alliance is asking the public to share feedback through an online form. The alliance did not provide a closing date, but directed the public to the alliance’s website for updates on the feedback form and the listening sessions.

IPS is also seeking feedback in a separate community survey posted to the district’s website. This online survey will remain open until Friday, Dec. 5.

The alliance has focused on three areas: transportation, facilities and who should run Indianapolis schools. The group’s members presented ideas earlier this month for changes to each of these areas, and education advocates are already sharing what they think of the proposals.

Get the backstory

Parents say they hope the group’s work brings stability to the IPS district and makes transportation to students’ school of choice easier. However, there’s mixed opinions on how to achieve those goals.

On Friday, Nov. 21, IPS Superintendent Aleesia Johnson shared a video reiterating her beliefs that IPS should keep its elected school board, its control over transportation services and its ownership of school buildings.

The superintendent also said that redrawing IPS boundaries to only include Center Township — an idea that had come up in recent community meetings — was not being considered at this time.

The alliance is expected to organize several community listening sessions in early December. Dates and locations are to be decided.

The Indianapolis Local Education Alliance is expected to deliver its recommendations for changes by the end of the year. The group’s next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, Dec. 17.

More information for this meeting, such as an agenda and location, will be shared on the alliance’s website prior to the meeting.
