If you need help doing your taxes for free, there’s lots of places across Marion County where volunteers can file for you.
That help doesn’t end when you finish filing. The Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic and Indiana Legal Services offer low-income taxpayer clinics where professionals can assist you with any issues that come up after your file or when you get your tax return: tax preparer fraud, appealing IRS decisions or figuring out options when you can’t afford to pay what you owe.
What Low-Income Taxpayer Clinics offer
You can get free help through the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic or Indiana Legal Services with issues such as identity theft, IRS appeals, underreported income and liens. You qualify for the service if your income is 250% of the federal poverty line — which is $39,900 for a one-person household and $82,500 for a family of four.
They can also talk you through options for what to do when you can’t afford to pay what you owe on your taxes. That includes paying in installments, settling your tax debt for less than the full amount you owe or not paying at all, if you’re dealing with what the IRS calls financial hardship. You can read the full list of services online.
