Many could say Taylor Hall was primed for a career in music.

Her childhood bedroom used to be her dad’s recording studio. The 2018 Crispus Attucks graduate said she casually took an interest in playing the guitar and piano.

She released her first song, “I Can’t Breathe,” during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. Written by father, the song and its message of “standing for love not hate” took Hall to NPR, the March on Washington in 2020, and Los Angeles.

In the fourth episode of REVERB, I sat down with Hall to discuss new motherhood, how SZA promoted one of her songs and why she wants to make music that helps others get through life.

REVERB, which kicked off in 2025, features interviews with Black artists in Indiana and across the Midwest and blends original performances with reinterpretations of Black music legends. It’s presented in partnership with I Made Rock N Roll, a GANGGANG initiative that celebrates the role of Black artists in shaping rock ‘n’ roll history.

Hall’s latest single, “MIA,” is an ode to early 2000s alternative rock, a shift from her more bedroom pop sound. The song caught the attention of many — including Grammy Award-winner SZA, who shared the music video to her 23 million Instagram followers.

“I thought it was fake,” Hall said jokingly. “I was posting (the song) every day for about a month … what you put out in the universe will come back to you.”

Stay tuned for more REVERB interviews with The Brothers Footman and White Moms.
