Butler University plans to build new apartments on campus, the university announced today, Feb. 6.
Butler students are required to live on campus for three years and can live off campus as seniors. The new apartments will be available to juniors, seniors and graduate students, as well as some young alumni who want to be close to Butler to attend basketball games and events.
Butler did not provide a project cost nor an estimate of how much residents would pay to live in the new building, though a spokesperson said the university would conduct “comprehensive market research” to determine how much to charge residents.
Currently, the costs for on-campus apartments range from $4,445 to $5,975 a semester, which amounts to roughly $1,110 to $1,493 a month.
Frank E. Ross III, Butler’s vice president for student affairs, said there is a limited supply of housing options in the neighborhood surrounding campus, the majority of which are older homes.
“We are designing housing for students who want the independence of apartment living, but also want to have access to campus amenities and to remain part of our safe, vibrant campus community,” Ross said. “Additionally, students will no longer need to commit to an off-campus housing lease years in advance.”
The building project will take place in phases, with the first phase set to open by summer 2026.
