We might’ve had our first snowfall of the season, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to put away the bike. It’s almost Cranksgiving, after all.
Cranksgiving is a national event where people across the country come together to bike to local stores and buy food to donate.
Local bike company ActiveIndy Tours brought the event to Indianapolis in 2012. Nine13sports took it over in 2019. The organization, with a goal to bring the joy of bicycling to kids of all ages, abilities and backgrounds across the city, took it over in 2019.
This year’s Cranksgiving will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, with a meeting point at Guggman Haus Brewing Co., 1701 Gent Ave.
You don’t need to be an experienced cyclist to join. The event is designed for anyone, regardless of age or ability.
Cyclists are given a list of local stores in a 5-mile radius and food items to purchase with their own money. There’s no set routes. People can choose how they’d like to bike to stores based on what they are comfortable with.
All the food that is purchased during the event will be donated to four elementary schools in the near northwest side: Holy Angels Catholic School, Global Prep Academy, Liberty Grove Academy and Vision Academy.
Interested in going? You’ll need to register; tickets cost $23.18. The money goes towards staff and supply costs. Any extra funds are used to purchase gift cards and donations to give to the schools.
