Learn about lead contamination in Indianapolis during “The Spread of Lead” from 2-3:30 p.m. April 6 at the Garfield Park Art Center, 2432 Conservatory Drive.
The free class is taught by Marian University chemistry professor Kamila Deavers. You can learn how to avoid being contaminated by the heavy metal. Kids also will have a chance to plant sunflowers they can take home, and they can join in other fun activities.
The class can help families avoid the health problems caused by exposure to lead, including damage to the brain and kidneys.
In 2023 alone, blood testing identified 164 kids in Marion County with blood lead levels high enough for health investigators to get involved. That’s more than double the previous year, according to the Indiana Department of Health.
