What do you take into consideration when considering more lenient versus stricter sentencing?

In any sentencing decision, I consider aggravating and mitigating circumstances, harm and risk to the public and individuals, the defendant’s background, individual circumstances, and needs for reformation. I consider the evidence and arguments presented to the Court, victim impact statements, and any statement the defendant chooses to make. I am bound by statutory sentencing ranges, and statutory requirements regarding the suspension of sentences and credit time.

Do you view a person’s sentence as a matter of punishment or rehabilitation? Please explain.

I am required to follow the Indiana Constitution. Article 1, Section 18 of the Indiana Constitution states that our laws are founded on principles of reformation, and not vindictive justice.

Outside of your professional life, have you had direct contact with the criminal justice system? How has that shaped your approach to your work?

Prior to becoming a judicial officer, I started my legal career as a public defender.
