If you’re experiencing sticker shock every time you go to the grocery store, you’re looking to buy a home or you want to pay off your student loans, there are programs across Marion County where you can learn about money management.

These options include in-person classes, online classes, a list of book recommendations and personalized coaching.

Indianapolis Public Library

📍Classes across the library branches

At libraries, you can go to free classes that teach you to protect yourself from scams, manage your household’s money or start a small business. There’s also a list of book recommendations for adults and kids to learn about money and a guide to online classes you can take at any time.

John Boner Neighborhood Centers

🗓️ 10-11 a.m. March 10 and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 14

You can attend one-time classes at John Boner Neighborhood Centers in March. On March 10, Gateway Orientation will introduce you to financial literacy and connect you to more services at the center. You do not have to register, and the same class will be offered once a month through November.

On March 14, you can spend a morning at the Pathways to Your Financial Destination class, diving into how to build your savings and credit and manage your debt. You can register and find more dates online.

MLK Center

📍40 W. 40th St.

The MLK Center offers coaching to help you understand a credit report, create a budget, pay down debt and stick to the financial goals you set.

Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center

Coaches at the Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center will give you personalized recommendations, whether that’s how to pay off your student loans or how to increase your net worth. Financial coaching and classes are free and open to anyone. Fill out a form online or call 317-639-6106 to get connected with a financial coach.

Hawthorne Community Center

📍2440 W. Ohio St.

Get connected to employment, financial and income support coaching. These coaches help you search for a job, plan for big purchases, manage your money and apply for SNAP, TANF or Medicaid.

Call the center at 317-637-4312 and ask to speak with the Center for Working Families program navigator. They can get you set up, and you can go to a monthly orientation to understand everything the community center offers.

Flanner House

Flanner House’s Center for Working Families includes all kinds of resources: GED classes, literacy training, legal assistance and financial literacy coaching. Go to Flanner House in person or call 317-925-4231.

Community Action of Greater Indianapolis

📍3266 N. Meridian St.

This nonprofit, which serves low-income individuals, offers a homebuyer education program and a financial literacy class.

If you are interested in the financial literacy program, contact Nicole Ice at nice@cagi-in.org or call 317-279-5661. You also have to fill out intake forms ahead of time online.
