Josephine Garis Cochran invented the first dishwasher in the 1880s, making the chore a lot more bearable. Alice Parker designed central heating systems in 1919 that were the precursor of the HVAC units in our homes today. Here in Indy, Madam C.J. Walker started a hair care line in the early 1900s that made her a millionaire — and a philanthropist.
When I get to stand in my warm house and don’t have to hand-wash a dish, I wish I could call these women and say thank you. For Women’s History Month, we set up a voicemail box so you can do just that.
You can share your appreciation for any woman who’s inspired you, whether they’re a friend, loved one or mentor, or a historical figure you have never met. We’ll share your voicemails in a story in honor of Women’s History Month in March.
Call us at 317-268-2017‬ and leave a message by March 9. We will publish your messages anonymously in a story, so a few days later, you can scroll through and listen to the love everyone shared for the women in their lives and in history. I’m calling it now: You’ll probably laugh and cry.
