You can kick off your celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day with IPS’ annual tribute on Friday, Jan. 16.

IPS’ 45th annual tribute to the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be from 10-11 a.m. at Crispus Attucks High School, 1140 Dr. MLK Jr. St.

The event is free and open to the public. It will also be streamed live on the IPS YouTube channel and broadcast on PBS station WFYI-1.

This year’s celebration carries the theme: “The Power of Voice: Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

The program will feature musical and dance performances from the Imani Praise Team from Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, the iibada Dance Company and the Crispus Attucks High School Choir.

FOX59/CBS4 reporter Rafael Sanchez will serve as emcee for the event. Other speakers include:

  • IPS Board President Angelia Moore
  • IPS Superintendent Aleesia Johnson
  • Joseph Lennis Tucker Edmonds, an associate professor of religious studies and Africana studies at IU Indianapolis.
  • Erreol Morgan, minister at New Direction Church
  • Crispus Attucks Principal Lauren Franklin
  • Patricia Payne, director of IPS’ Office of Strategic Educational Excellence

Schools in the IPS district will be closed Jan. 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. More information about the Jan. 16 tribute can be found on the IPS website.
