Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations are kicking off early in Indianapolis.
Residents can begin their weekend with a livestream of IPS’ annual Tribute to Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. broadcast Jan. 17 from Crispus Attucks High School.
Speeches and performances from students and community leaders begin at 10 a.m. and will be shown on both PBS station WFYI-1 and IPS’ Youtube channel. Viewers can also watch on the PBS website and streaming app.
The theme of this year’s tribute reflects a quote from the civil rights leader: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
Tina Cosby, community affairs director and a show host at 106.7 WTLC, will emcee the event and Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears will deliver the keynote address.
Other notable speakers include IPS Board of Commissioners President Angelia Moore, IPS Superintendent Aleesia Johnson, Crispus Attucks Principal Lauren Franklin and Patricia Payne, director of the IPS Office of Racial Equity and Inclusion.
The program will also feature performances from the Imani Praise Team of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, the Crispus Attucks Junior ROTC Color Guard, the George Washington High School Concert Choir and Krash Krew of Eastern Star Church.
